INVISIBLE CONGA PEOPLE “Cable Dazed” 12″ Transparent Blue Mist
Late one night many years ago, Justin Simon, one half of Manhattan duo Invisible Conga People, found himself in the nightclubs of Tokyo, listening to bone-rattling beats & eagerly dancing. Simon had come up on post-punk & noise-rock — bands like Public Image Limited & Can, scuzzy & propulsive. But the Japanese dance floor was for him a revelation. “I was pretty much hooked on club music from that moment,” he remembers. “It was just so much more fun than staring at a band.”
Invisible Conga People sounds exactly like the product of that awakened sensibility. Simon, alongside bandmate Eric Tsai, channels the gritty vigor of classic krautrock & no-wave into an effervescent vein that distinctly recalls house & disco. “Cable Dazed” is a thumping analog wonder, moody & bass-rich, equally suited to a trace of private reflection as a spasm among the strobe lights of the club. “Weird Pains” drifts into more eccentric territory, laying down a hypnotic groove before winding into curlicues of experimentation.
