ANDREW DOUGLAS ROTHBARD “Divonium Digitalis”
$10.00
When he was thirteen years old Andrew Douglas Rothbard had a revelation. Syd Barrett & marijuana. The wildly gifted songwriter & multi-instrumentalist had been immersed in music from infancy, tapping away at the piano at the age of six & obsessing over Beatles cassettes in early adolescence, but it wasn’t until he heard “A Nice Pair” that the floor gave way and sound really swallowed him. “Everything that was so nightmarish about those Beatles records became a daydream. The vibe was much more light,” he remembers. “People always talk about Syd in this dark kind of way, but that first Floyd album destroyed every bad dream I ever had.” It left an indelible impression. Rothbard’s been floating on that high ever since.
That same wide-eyed childhood enthusiasm for the possibilities of music persists in Rothbard’s music. It’s in evidence all over Divonium Digitalis, which introduces the electronic wunderkind to the Italians Do It Better fold with sprawling variety & verve. “Worshipping the Myth of Betrayed Talent” rolls & crests with the preludial intensity of the epic to come. The nearly eight-minute “Prognoz Relikt”, meanwhile, is a virtuoso stunner of whirling digital experimentation, as intensely intricate as it is mesmerizingly vast. On “Rat and the Family Bones”, Rothbard leans into the reverb-heavy cloud of ambient noise, ethereal chill & blissed-out longing. “Section 8 Face” draws the record to a close in a heave of glitches. Destroy every bad dream you ever had.
